Old Poems

I managed to read some of my old poems, finally. The first time I tried reading them, it didn't go so well. I found that having a file open to write down what I was feeling after each poem helped.

At the end, I was able to pick apart some things about my voice and style I hadn't before. I'm going to review them once more and decide which to keep, which to rewrite, and which to let go.

Letting go has been a hard thing.

Old Professor

By chance, I happened along one of my old professors. I took one of her classes in contemporary poetry. It was nice to see her. She asked me to email her some of my work when I mentioned I was getting back into writing. Once I finish reviewing my poems, I'll reach out to her.

Old Voice

One thing I've been thinking about lately is what my voice is like now. It's a thing I keep poking at when I'm not reading or writing. I want to say when I was sad, it was easier to know what to write about and to bring words onto the page, even if looking back on it, they read as a rambling mess. But now, I can't see the audience past me saw, I can't understand the maze of their mind, their idiosyncracies.

I'm doing my best to console my past self. Give them a break.
